CSSG ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

We encourage you to read through all eligibility requirements in preparation for your application.


To be considered an eligible applicant, you must:

  • be enrolled and attending post-secondary education (PSE) during spring, summer or fall 2020; or

  • have graduated from PSE no earlier than December 2019; and

  • be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, First Nation, Métis or Inuit, or those with Refugee status.

RESIDENCE

  • International students are not eligible to receive a grant, however they can still participate in the volunteering aspects of the CSSG.

  • Canadian students who study abroad but are currently residing in Canada, and do their volunteer hours in Canada, are eligible.

AGE REQUIREMENT

  • To be eligible for the grant, post-secondary students and recent graduates must be 30 years old or younger as of December 31st, 2020.

Post-secondary education includes:

Part-time or full-time study over a period of at least 12 weeks which must be in pursuit of a degree, diploma or certificate at an accredited institution.

CSSG eligibility of students receiving other income benefits

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS

  • those receiving the Canada Emergency Student Benefit ($1,250/month, or higher for students with disabilities or dependents);

  • those who are employed; and

  • students receiving a micro-grant through the Canada Service Corps program, may use their hours towards the CSSG.

INELIGIBLE STUDENTS

  • Students who are receiving, or who have received at any time, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) ($2,000 monthly), are not eligible to receive the CSSG. Students will be required to attest that they have at no time been in receipt of the CERB.

Disbursement of the Canada Student Service Grant

Applicants must register by the deadline of August 21, 2020 in order to receive the CSSG.

The CSSG will be paid in a lump-sum amount based on the number of validated volunteer hours that an applicant has completed between Thursday June 25, 2020 and Saturday October 31, 2020.

Applicants must reach the minimum number of hours for each threshold (e.g. an applicant who submits 270 hours is only eligible to receive the $2,000/200 hours level disbursement amount).

The CSSG will be disbursed to eligible student volunteer applicants within 60 days of receipt of payment from the Government of Canada, unless demand exceeds initial projections and/or for incomplete applications which require further review.
